I was out hunting mussels (appropriate activity for a massage therapist on vacation). For some reason I had not left my Sports Massage
back at the house. I was doing some fancy footwork in an effort to reach for a mussel without getting wet. Then, plunk! Just as I was celebrating the retrieval of the mussel from the small pool. “Isn’t that your phone?”, my friend said. I looked down and sitting on the floor of the small pool sat my Sports Massage
. “Oh, no.” It then had my attention in fits and spurts for the remainder of the trip. I distracted myself by playing bocce and other vacation activities.
Did I do something to cause this to happen? I had been pretty impressed by my maneuvers on the rocks to get the mussel. Had I been feeling the attachment I had to my phone? There are no accidents some say. I need to replace it immediately(yes, now). I could have survived the day, even the whole vacation, without once using my phone. I found myself looking for every glimmer of hope that it would magically just be as it was again. I was also unsure whether or not I went for the insurance plan when I purchased it. THose mussels may have cost me big.
All of these thoughts kept repeating. There were moments when I was able to tame them. I did enjoy the vacation even with this little hang up(no pun intended). I was able to commandeer my dad’sSports Massage
when I met my parents for dinner on Sunday- admittedly I was pretty frantic having just missed stores closing, still unsure of how long I would have to be without.
You would think that the lesson would be simple - don’t take your cell phone mussel picking, however, the real lesson for me was a view into how to deal with stress. While I did have some frantic moments, I was able to step back from the situation for periods of time and allow things to just be. I was inspired by all of the creativity my friends have, writers, designers (web, fashion, graphic), chefs. We had a great expedition to local stores and a fabulous dinner that night, yes the mussels were delicious, breakfast and a nice ride the next morning. In the future I’ll keep my Blackberry away from the water, for now I’ll try to enjoy each moment no matter what.
