Numb fingers? Is it Carpal Tunnel or your pecs

Carpal Tunnel seems to be in vogue.  Many people know someone who knows someone, but really many are jumping to conclusions about their supposed Carpal Tunnel.    Not all wrist pain is created equal.   Carpal Tunnel can also feel slightly similar to Thoracic Outlet,  both of which involve numbing or tingling fingers,  but Thoracic Outlet is generally the middle through pinky while Carpal Tunnel is thumb through middle finger.   You may notice that both involve the middle finger, nerves are funny that way.

Perhaps you wake up with numbness or tingling in your fingers, or maybe it comes at the end of the day.   It may seem on that the cause could be in your upper chest near the shoulder.   The nerves are somewhat elusive, but when obstructed by muscle tension, there are those such as the sciatic, medial or ulnar, which can cause pain, numbness and tingling.

Carpal Tunnel symptoms should be taken very seriously.   In fact, if you truly have carpal tunnel, the pain is excruciating, not just a nuisance but debilitating.  I’m not suggesting that you don’t see a doctor, but you may want to consult other professionals first.   If you feel you’re symptoms are similar to those described in say WebMD pages on the subject see someone, skilled massage therapists, chiropractors, and the like have had quite a bit of experience with these conditions.  Surgery is a last step, again, if you really have carpal tunnel, it can be excruciatingly painful.

With that in mind, when a massage therapist treats these symptoms the work can feel a bit uncomfortable, however, the results are what is important.   THe massage therapist is loooking to release the pec minor muscle.   The pec minor is in the upper chest, underneath the pec major.    It’s as glamorous as it sounds.  THis is not relaxing at the spa kind of work, but the goal is to get the feeling back in your hands, right?   That itself would be relaxng, the luxurious feeling of YOUR HANDS WORKING.

Always interview your massage therapist, they may need to refer you to someone else,  there are many modalities and not every therapist is the best at all of them.   Doctors have specialties, so do MTs.
